Control feels like leadership. It isn’t.
The best leaders I’ve ever had let me fail. Not because they didn’t care. Because they knew something I didn’t yet. That failure was the lesson. The thing that actually stuck.
Think about the worst manager you ever had. I’d bet money they were controlling. Hovering. Always had to have the answer. Never let you figure anything out on your own.
Now think about the best one. Bet they got out of your way.
Letting go is hard. Your team’s performance affects your job. Of course you want to control it. That instinct makes sense.
But here’s what I’ve learned. The tighter you grip, the less they grow. And a team that never grows because you won’t let them is a team that will eventually stop trying.
Your job isn’t to have all the answers. It’s to build people who can find them. That’s the whole idea behind this post.
So the question is simple. Have you gotten out of the way lately?
